Barring the simple comfort of cotton versus plastic and the moment of bonding shared each time you spend a minute changing your baby's diaper here are
Some Facts...
Diaper Rash
Studies have reported that babies one month old had a 71% chance of having
diaper rash. In contrast, babies in cloth diapers had a 6.1% chance.
Cloth diapers allow air flow to keep your
babies bottom breathing!
Chemical Contact
There have been concerns with Sodium Polyacrylate (the super absorbent
gel) in disposable diapers. This gel has been linked to Toxic Shock
Syndrome, allergic reactions, and is very harmful and potentially
lethal to pets(and is still used even in most unbleached disposables). The dyes and Dioxin (a by-product from bleaching) in
disposables according to The Environmental Protection Agency is known
to cause damage to the central nervous system, kidneys, and liver.
Land Fill
It is estimated that roughly 5 million tons of untreated waste and a
total of 2 billion tons of urine, feces, plastic and paper are added to
landfills annually. When flushing solids from a cloth diaper and
washing them in a machine the water goes into sewer systems where it is
treated. This is much more environmentally friendly that filling our
landfills.
Potty Training
Most parents of cloth diapered children report early potty training (up to 1 1/2 years earlier).
The absorbent gel in disposables masks the feeling of wetness even though
they still are in contact with urine; making it harder for them to
recognize their bodies signals.
Some lay claims to the fact that water use outweighs the benefits of these findings, yet the water used to wash one families diapers for the week is equivalent to a few flushes of the toilet; or simply the clothes that will be washed each week
